CALLING ALL ARTISTS & ARTISANS

The Bowen Island Arts Council invites local artists and artisans to participate in the 2019 Studio Tours on Bowen Island during National Culture Days. In 2018, we launched Studio Tours, with 24 artists and galleries participating. Following the weekend, which coincided with national Culture Days and was held on the final two days of September, we checked in with artists and they overwhelming agreed that the initiative was a success. Last year, the stops included visual artists, sculptors, ceramicists, print makers, book makers, illustrators, textile artists and jewellers. Who will be on the Studio Tour in 2019? For full information about how to participate, click here. To download an Artist Agreement, click here. Deadline for submissions is Friday, June 21.

Volunteer With Us

We love our volunteers. Without a doubt, they are our most valuable resource. Our nonprofit charity could not exist without the support of its amazing team of volunteers. In 2017 alone, an amazing committed team of volunteers filled approximately 160 roles. The value of their work is estimated at a conservative figure of $102,500. We are indebted to these champions of the arts.

As we settle in to our new home at the Cove Commons, we are seeking new volunteers to jump into our creative environment and join the fun. We are looking to add to our roster of Gallery Hosts, beginning this fall.

Do you have time and interest in helping the arts thrive on Bowen?

The role of Gallery Host at the Gallery @ the Cove Commons includes: greeting visitors and helping to promote our exhibits; administering art sales; attending special events and celebrations.

We are now recruiting new volunteers who are able to commit to a three or six hours shift, on a regular day at least once a month.

Bowen Island Municipality adopts revised 10-Year Cultural Master Plan!

After two years of hard work and expansive community consultation, initiated and led by the Bowen Island Arts Council (BIAC), BIM Council has adopted the revised Cultural Master Plan as Bylaw #466. The plan’s approval continues to recognize the Arts Council as the lead organization for the implementation of arts and culture on Bowen.

It includes 16 Strategic Goals and 36 recommendations. The legal document is a roadmap that will help advance arts and culture on Bowen Island while creating a socially, economically, healthier and more liveable community.

Join us at the Hearth!

There is a new era dawning for the Bowen Island Arts Council (BIAC). A culmination of many things – the celebration of 30 years of service to the community, the adoption of a new Cultural Plan for our island, the opening of the Gallery @ Cove Commons – all of these accomplishments have transported the nonprofit to a new beginning. And with new beginnings comes new energy and a revitalized organization.

The arts council will remain true to its roots, while reaching out to the larger Bowen community by acknowledging: “We are all artists here.” Though the legal name will remain Bowen Island Arts Council, as the charity enters its 40th decade it will operate with a renewed sense of purpose and direction under a new name: “The Hearth – Arts on Bowen.” As it’s brand essence states: “The possibilities are endless.”

The Hearth gratefully acknowledges the support of the Bowen Island Municipality, the BC Arts Council and the Province of British Columbia. The Arts Council also thanks all its wonderful members and our community for its unwavering support of local arts and culture.
