Gallery @ Cove Commons closed until further notice

Pursuant to the updated advisories from provincial and federal health authorities, the Bowen Island Arts Council is announcing the immediate closure of the Gallery @ Cove Commons. As well, we are suspending our programming until further notice.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

We recognize that the arts are critical to the health and vitality of our community. However, we feel it is prudent to close at this time to try to help limit the spread of COVID-19, and to help ensure the health and safety of our members, volunteers, staff and public. We appreciate your patience and understanding on this matter.

We recommend that you stay informed about the virus by consulting reliable sources such as:
May you, your family, and our community remain healthy.

Visual Arts Committee of the Hearth

Members of our Visual Arts Committee (VAC) at the Gallery @ Cove Common are superstars. This mighty team, supporting our Curator, Emilie Kaplun, and working with other staff, just coordinated the highly successful annual Mini-Gala, raising $11,000 for the Gallery! Joining Greta Smith, (chair), Anne Boa, Carol McNaughton and Mary Lynn Machado are Mike Arthur, one of our esteemed Gallery Host Volunteers and Debbie Benson, also a beloved volunteer, who has accepted the role of Volunteer Coordinator for the Hearth. A standing ovation to this great group of folks.

We are now inviting new people to join this extraordinary group of volunteers!
The VAC plays an integral role in fostering the arts, artists and the appreciation of arts in our community on Bowen. We roll up our sleeves and take on an assortment of jobs to support the Curator and ensure the Gallery is run professionally and efficiently. The committee adjudicates an annual calendar of art exhibits; it assists with the physical work of mounting shows; members offer ideas and expertise as needed, and organize fundraising events to support the operations of the Gallery and non-profit organization. We have fun in a creative environment that contributes to the verve and livelihood of our island community. If you are interested in joining this active committee, and can commit approximately seven hours per month (including monthly meetings), we’d love to hear from you.

Please contact Greta at giftshop@thehearth.ca for more information and to apply to join our team.
Gallery Host Volunteers:
Do you have time and interest in helping the arts thrive on Bowen? The role of Gallery Host at the Gallery @ the Cove Commons includes: greeting visitors and helping to promote our exhibits; administering art sales; attending special events and celebrations. We are now recruiting new volunteers who are able to commit to a three or six hours shift, on a regular day at least once a month. To download a Gallery Host Volunteer application, click here. Please fill out, save it and return the form to Jacqueline Bell-Irving, Volunteer Coordinator.

Bowen Island Municipality adopts revised 10-Year Cultural Master Plan!

After two years of hard work and expansive community consultation, initiated and led by the Bowen Island Arts Council (BIAC), BIM Council has adopted the revised Cultural Master Plan as Bylaw #466. The plan’s approval continues to recognize the Arts Council as the lead organization for the implementation of arts and culture on Bowen.

It includes 16 Strategic Goals and 36 recommendations. The legal document is a roadmap that will help advance arts and culture on Bowen Island while creating a socially, economically, healthier and more liveable community.

Join us at the Hearth!

There is a new era dawning for the Bowen Island Arts Council (BIAC). A culmination of many things – the celebration of 30 years of service to the community, the adoption of a new Cultural Plan for our island, the opening of the Gallery @ Cove Commons – all of these accomplishments have transported the nonprofit to a new beginning. And with new beginnings comes new energy and a revitalized organization.

The arts council will remain true to its roots, while reaching out to the larger Bowen community by acknowledging: “We are all artists here.” Though the legal name will remain Bowen Island Arts Council, as the charity enters its 40th decade it will operate with a renewed sense of purpose and direction under a new name: “The Hearth – Arts on Bowen.” As it’s brand essence states: “The possibilities are endless.”

The Hearth gratefully acknowledges the support of the Bowen Island Municipality, the BC Arts Council and the Province of British Columbia. The Arts Council also thanks all its wonderful members and our community for its unwavering support of local arts and culture.
